The goal of this resource page is to provide educators, law enforcement, and community members with educational tools and materials to assist in the fight to reduce cyber crimes. This will be done through education, awareness, and reporting.


 

Internet Safety Act

The new Internet Safety Act can be viewed at the Illinois State Board of Education website along with additional Internet safety best practices and resources. Click here to open the Illinois State Board of Education website.

Beginning in the 2009-2010 school year, school districts have to incorporation Internet safety education into the curriculum for grades 3 and above. It is recommended that the following seven units be included:

  1. Safe and responsible use of social networking websites, chat rooms, electronic mail, bulletin boards, instant messaging, and other means of communication on the Internet.
  2. Recognizing, avoiding, and reporting online solicitations of students, their classmates, and their friends by sexual predators.
  3. Risks of transmitting personal information on the Internet.
  4. Recognizing and avoiding unsolicited or deceptive communications received online.
  5. Recognizing and reporting online harassment and cyber-bullying.
  6. Reporting illegal activities and communications on the Internet.
  7. Copyright laws on written materials, photographs, music, and video.

Avoid ID Theft

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has created a website that educates individuals on ways to deter, deflect, and defend against ID theft. One common way ID theft occurs is through Phishing. Ex. "They (criminals) pretend to be financial institutions or companies and send spam or pop-up messages to get you to reveal your personal information." www.ftc.gov/idtheft. CyberTipLine

This site has been created to handle crimes concerning possession, manufacture, and distribution of child pornography, online enticement of children for sexual acts, child victims of prostitution, sex tourism involving children, extrafamilial molestation of children, obscene material sent to a child, and misleading domain names.
